June 13th: 5 Stages of Group Development

The "5 Stages of Group Development" are easy to remember because they rhyme: forming, storming, norming, performing, adjourning. If someone were to ask me to write down the 5 stages of group development before knowing this I could give a brief overview that was relatively close to this, but not as specific. In terms of our class group project, we did not have much freedom with the "forming" stage. We were given a group of students that most of us did not know prior to this course. This will be a test of how well we can work with others when not actually ever meeting them in person or having the ability to meet up in person to work on the project like I am used to. For the "storming" stage, we have not had any conflict thus far. We have all had a relatively smooth process selecting our topic and the way we want to present it. I would say as a group we are currently in the norming stage.

  1. I absolutely loved your blog post on the article our course was assigned to read known as "5 States of Group Development." For some reason I never noticed the rhyme to the 5 given stages "forming, storming, norming, performing, and adjourning." This made it a lot easier for me to remember these 5 stages of group development. I also that the given names for the 5 stages were easy to understand the meaning behind them as well. Overall fantastic job on your reflection regarding the article.

  2. Sarah,

I really liked your post. I did notice the rhyming of each development which I think is funny that you pointed out. I found this article to be extremely helpful on knowing how a group works and what is the best way to be successful while flowing ideas together. I compared this article to the way my current group project is going because I think without communication and being efficient in understanding who is doing what was the most successful part about working with my classmates in this class. Overall, great job on this post.
