June 16th: Yes, Social Media Friendships are Real

Inspired by the article I read yesterday, I found one in the NY Post that somewhat contradicts my beliefs. "Yes, Social Media Friendships are Real," argues that the friends we make online are true friendships. I found this title to be interesting and I wanted to give the other side a chance to see what they had to say about it. The author argues that Facebook friends are "no substitute for the real thing," but she believes your Facebook friends still play a role in your life. The author highlights that a study found that social interaction improves psychological well-being. I completely agree with this and can see what social media platforms such as Facebook or Twitter can give someone the essence of community and social interaction, but I still stand by the fact that nothing can change having a real in person friendship. If you have all these "friends" online, what happens when you need one of them in real life? We are a social and companion oriented species, it is just in our blood. I believe we need to be around others and have interaction with others in person in order to be truly happy.

  1. Hello, I think that this is a fantastic post as I agree with it completely, all that you are saying contrary to the article. It may be more at someones comfort level to have their friendships be completely online but it is more likely healthier to make these relationships in person as they may be truer in meaning and in a sense more real.
