June 19th: Shirky Chapter 10

Today we were instructed to read Shirky Chapter 10. The title of this chapter is "Failure for Free." I enjoyed this chapter because it highlights on how collaboration builds various communities. I particularly thought the stay at home mom example in the beginning of the chapter was interesting. Before reading this, I never thought of stay at home moms as a community. My mom was a stay at home mom for awhile when I was growing up, and now that I think about it, it really is a collaborative community. Her and the other stay at home moms who had kids enrolled at the same school as me participated in many activities together. They would all volunteer to serve lunch in our cafeteria, join book clubs together, and play tennis together during the day. They would be active in our school community, and were their own little community of moms. The moms were even involved in what is called the spirit committee at our school. They would sell snacks at the sports games and design school spirited t-shirts.

  1. I to had to stop and think about my mom being part of a whole community of single mom. As I as reading your blog I remember my mom doing this as well. Waking my brothers and I up for school. Working, Feeding us, clothing, us volunteering, homework, church, and the list goes on and on. I think with todays technology it would be beneficial for single moms or just moms in general to be able to have an outlet with an online group.

  2. I too really enjoyed the given book reading Chapter 10 title "Failure For Free." The topic the particular chapter describes involves how collaboration builds various communities. It was good to see myself and be able to read and view some of the success collaboration has caused as well as the communities too. I also particularly enjoyed the section discussing the stay at home nom community. As stated in my blog post reviewing back the reading too about the stay at home mom community. Overall great read and great job on your written blog post.
