June 20th: Jenkins
Today I read Jenkins, et al., 2013 "Spreadable Media: Introduction." When I first read the title of the reading, the first thing that came to my mind was different posts that go viral on social media platforms. This is what I think of when I hear spreadable media because these videos and posts are shared and spread like rapid fire. This reading was all about how content circulates these days. It states that "spreadable media focuses on the social logics and cultural practices that have enabled and popularized these new platforms." Whether it's a video of a cute puppy, a news article about a serious current event or a funny meme, content is so "spreadable" these days because social media platforms give us this power. It just takes one click of a button and you have now shared something for however many Facebook friends you have to see when they scroll through their timeline. Content online goes viral because social media gives these posts the power to be seen by millions of people within seconds.
Sarah,
ReplyDeleteI agree that the term "spreadable media" can be taken literal to where media is spread to different platforms. I happened to really like this reading because from a personal level and being a journalism major, this is as true as it gets. Everyone is constantly held in the loop to make sure everyone is on the same page and no major or minor mistakes are made before going into print. With technology advancing, it's become lenient with making mistakes online since the media can quickly fix the problem but with print, everything is set in stone and since most are sent at a national level - that can be a dramatic loss to the business. That's why having online communities in the media workplace has become an essential product.
Sarah,
ReplyDeleteWhen I first read the title of the assigned reading, I also thought about the way in which individuals post via various social media platforms. I thought it was interesting how you noted that media is quite easily spreadible due to technology because you have the ability to share a video for instance to 1,000 of your Facebook friends instantly. It is wild to think how much of an impact that could have. Do you think that social media has allowed us to share too much information that it becomes overwhelming, or do you think it is ultimately beneficial for society? Great work!
We had the same initial thoughts when approaching this article because the title was pretty self explanatory. All of your points were very valid about how easy media in the world is “spreadable” today. For example, I've seen that video of a cute puppy gone viral many times before. I like what you said about the power that social media gives us because I think it's so important. We don't realize how much power we have when we post on our social media sites. It's actually something we need to be more cautious about because even if something is posted then deleted it is always on the internet and it was still shared at least once so it will travel further. You highlighted all of the important parts of the article. Overall, Great post!
