June 21st: Was Foucalt a plagiarist? Hip-hop sampling and academic citation

This article, written by Mickey Hess, talks about academic citation and hip-hop sampling. I had never heard of the term "hip-hop sampling," prior to this article. Hess defines it as, "samples may be music or vocals from other songs or may be borrowed from nonmusical sources such as films, political speeches, or television commercials." The article gives many examples relating to this topic, and relating to academic citation. He also states that, "sampling, as in the above example, often comments on and critiques sources through juxtaposition." I found all of this information to be very interesting because a lot of it I had not known before. This article brought a lot of light upon what can be considered plagiarism, and the author takes this concept in depth. It made me realize how careful not only authors etc. have to be when citing work, but me as a college student as well. I have always tried my hardest to cite properly, but it can be a challenge as a new writer. I have had many friends come into situations where they have plagiarized, and not even realized that they did so, because they did not re-phrase the content enough or did not properly cite it.

  1. Sarah,
I liked both of your blog posts that I read today so I decided that it was appropriate to comment to comment on them both. I think that this article you described is very interesting because as a big fan of hip hop music I definitely noticed that this is something that is prominent in new hip hop music especially it is now very popular to put in popular parts of movies or interviews in a song to create a sort of collaboration. Great post!

  2. Hey Sarah, I enjoyed your post on this article because its something I have been passionate about for quite a while. You are not the only one that doesn't have much knowledge on what hip hop sampling is, I think that it goes over a lot of peoples heads when they hear something they think is familiar. Throughout the time music has been a thing this has always been an issue because hip hop music is a form of expression, so often people use speeches or other songs to try to express their message in a unique way. Thats what I love about rap music. I like what you said about the fine line with plagiarism because at the end of the day it is stealing and I've experienced some of my friends get in trouble for the same thing you said without even realizing it. This article was very informative and so was your post!
