June 27th: Humans Vs. The Robot-Apocalypse
Today I listened to the, “Humans Vs. The Robot-Apocalypse.” I
thought it was interesting that driver-less cars were brought up since I had
just mentioned that in my post yesterday. This concept blows my mind. I am not
sure whether I would love or hate it. It just seems as if there are so many
variables, and how could a computer pick up on every single little thing? The
driver-less cars that I see driving around Tempe have cameras at every angle on
the roof of the car to sense motion and detect accidents. I have also watched
videos of Tesla self-driving cars where they film accidents that happen in
front of them and how the car reacts. My only worry would be what if the
computer malfunctioned for some reason? When talking about what humans are better
at than computers, the answer is interaction with one another, building
relationships, and humor. This made me think about an episode I have seen of
the Netflix show, Black Mirror. A
young woman becomes widowed and misses her husband very much. Her friend tells
her about a service where a robot can recreate the deceased to help you grieve.
She takes it to the point where the service sends her a replicated version of
him, and while he looks and talks like him, it is not the same. She becomes
frustrated because the interaction will never be the exact same since it is
just a robot and not her actual husband. I do not believe robots or computers
will ever be capable of the conscious or emotional state that humans have.
Sarah,
ReplyDeleteGreat post today, I also listened to the podcast today and found it really interesting yet a tad scary to think about the fact that robots seem so far into the future yet, we are living in that era. I like how you added Black Mirror to your post, I've watched a few episodes of the show but haven't seen that particular one. I will look into this now and see the comparison you made with the podcast and show so thanks!
I also find it scary to think that robots are being able to replace humans. Now they are creating a robot to even walk your dog. I think that it is scary that everyday tasks are starting to be done by robots. It is crazy for me to think how much technology has advanced and how it is going to drastically change our future. I see it as both a positive and negative thing because it can help people out so much, but at the same time can take away so many jobs and will make people to become very lazy.
ReplyDeleteSarah, While commenting on another classmates post I said the same thing about cars that can drive themselves, its scary! I agree with you that technology advances today is awesome but I have the same fear that computers cannot be relied on 100%, after all they are a computer and there is always room for an error. I don't think living in a world run by robots would be fun at all, I think a boundary should be drawn and responsible jobs should remain being given to humans who can process things differently. I loved that episode of black mirror! It really made me think, at first it was just a prototype and then it was a replica of her husband. Throughout the episode I thought the whole thing was so weird until the very end when she wants him to feel and then when he finally does what she wants she gets upset because its just not the same thing as having a human companion. I definitely thought about this episode for a few days after watching it. Great post!
