June 5th: What is Collaboration Anyway?

Today I read the article: What is Collaboration Anyway?  This article goes into great depth in terms of what defines the term collaboration, as well as touching base on how some people misconstrue this definition. When I think of the word collaboration, the first thing that comes to my mind is working with others. When I think of collaborating, I think of working with an individual or multiple individuals to brainstorm ideas together to achieve the same end goal. The author provides numerous examples about what is and isn’t collaboration, but the one example I particularly enjoyed most was about the Israeli musician who made a mash up of different video clips. This is not considered “collaboration,” because all he did was extract clips from previously made videos and put them together. He did not work with any of the musicians from the videos to collaborate a new piece. This article has definitely made me start thinking about what true collaboration is, and has made me more aware of this concept.

  1. Sarah,

I love how you added your own personal touch to your blog by adding a picture of your/a cat! I also appreciate how you included your own definition of collaboration within your blog post. I also added the example of the Israeli musician, Kutiman and how by simply sharing something on the Internet, it does not necessarily mean that it is considered collaboration. He utilized technological tools and software to take others ideas and his overall intention was not to collaborate with the other musicians. Do you believe that Wikipedia is a form of collaboration? Great work!

  2. Sarah,
I like that you mentioned the explained one of the examples from the reading. I think it's interesting that the Israeli musician's work was not considered a collaboration because I think it should be. I think this way because although these people didn't have any part in the creation of this video, it did take their knowledge and time to create their own piece which was soon edited into one large one. I think this should be considered a collaboration. But I also understand why it is not.

  3. Hi Sarah!
When reading this article I also found myself comparing it to what I had previously thought about collaboration. There are so many different ways to collaborate that it is hard to even try thinking of all of them, but I think the main point of collaboration is definitely working together which you mentioned. I also realized the depth to which this article goes into "collaboration" relates to just how deep of a meaning it can have. It made me excited to learn more about all the forms of collaboration and I agree with you about how much more aware I was after the reading. Great post!

  4. I also found that I had a better understanding of what collaborating was. I did not know that there were so many different ways to look at it and there was a deeper meaning to collaborating. I also thought the Israeli musicians work was interesting to read about and how it was not considered collaborating. Before reading this article I would have considered that example to be collaborating and now I understand how it is not. This article was really interesting to me to see how in depth collaborating is because it is something that we do so often and I like how you explained it. Good Job!

  5. Hi Sarah, fantastic job on your post focusing on the given reading "What is Collaboration Anyways?" Your post out of a couple others I came across was the only one that focused there blog post on what is classified as collaboration and what is not. I really enjoyed reading the given examples on how to distinguish proper collaboration. I think this particular lesson is needed to know not only giving you a personal better understanding of collaboration but also the understand of what is not a collaborating interaction.
